Criteria
Submissions were judged on overall design excellence including response
to context, new technologies, craftsmanship / use of materials, sustainability,
preservation / adaptive re-use, and design innovation.
Eligibility
Completed projects of any size located in Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano
and Napa Counties could be submitted by any registered architect. Projects
outside the AIA East Bay area could be submitted by AIA East Bay members
or by registered architects with a primary business address within the
AIA East Bay area. Projects must have been built and must have been completed
since January 1, 1998. Projects that won earlier design awards in programs
other than previous AIA East Bay design awards remain eligible.
Jury
Renee Chow, Associate Professor of Architecture, University
of California, Berkeley.
Professor Chow teaches undergraduate and graduate design studios as well
as classes in design with an emphasis on observation, methods and use.
Her research focuses on the contemporary suburban condition and on alternatives
based upon a view of dwelling as a fabric. Ms. Chow is Principal of Studio
URBIS, where her work includes commercial, institutional and residential
projects. She is the author of Suburban Space: The Fabric of Dwelling
published by UC Press in 2002.
Barry Elbasani, FAIA, Principal, ELS Architecture and
Urban Design.
Mr. Elbasani is a founding Principal of the firm ELS Architecture and
Urban Design. His urban design and mixed-use design projects and the firm's
work has been recognized nationally and internationally for design excellence
by the AIA, the Urban Land Institute and publications including Progressive
Architecture, Architecture and Architectural Record. Mr. Elbasani also
lectures and advises on behalf of the Urban Land Institute on urban growth,
economic and real estate development and architectural design.
John King, Urban Design Writer, San Francisco Chronicle.
Mr. King’s pieces examine and critique the built environment, with a focus
on how architecture, planning and development shape life today. He was
a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the Criticism category in both 2002
and 2003. He has written on architectural issues for Metropolis and Boston
Architecture magazines. In 10 years at the San Francisco Chronicle, Mr.
King has also covered San Francisco City Hall, where he was the lead reporter
for the 1995 mayoral race, and he spent three years as a suburban columnist
for the paper’s Bay Area section.
