Frequently Asked Questions About...the ARE

How many divisions make up the ARE 3.1?
The ARE consists of nine divisions—six multiple-choice divisions and three graphic divisions. The multiple-choice divisions are: Pre-Design, General Structures, Lateral Forces, Mechanical & Electrical Systems, Building Design / Materials & Methods, and Construction Documents & Services. The graphic divisions are Site Planning, Building Planning, and Building Technology.

What if I think some of the questions were not clear/not pertinent to that division?
Write a letter to NCARB noting as much of the information about the exam and question of concern as possible. While it’s unlikely to change any negative scoring, you will have brought it to the test writers’ attention.

For the multiple-choice questions, I’ve heard that I will only be able to look at one question at a time and I will not be able to go back to previous questions to change answers. Is this true?
(From ncarb.org) It is true that you will only see one question at a time; however, you can go back to review and/or change answers.

When is the computer-based exam given?
PrometricTest centers are open Monday through Saturday, but hours vary from test center to test center. Contact the test center of your choice to determine their hours of operation. http://www.prometric.com

Do I have to take the exam at a test center within the borders of the state or province where I am seeking my initial license (registration)?
(From ncarb.org) No. The computer-based format removes geographical barriers. For instance, a candidate who started taking the exam in Oregon , and now lives in California , will be able to take the exam at any conveniently located test center, rather than having to return to Oregon . Scores will be forwarded to the initial jurisdiction where you are seeking registration.

Why is my eligibility not in the system?
If you call to schedule an exam and find that your eligibility is not in the system, you need to contact the CAB.

What kinds of practice programs are available for use before taking the graphic vignettes on computer?
NCARB has a tutorial program for candidates to familiarize themselves with the graphic vignettes before taking each division. The practice program is available at no cost on the NCARB web site: http://www.ncarb.org/are/tutorial2.html

If I fail a division of the exam, why do I have to wait six months until I can retake that division?
(From ncarb.org ) This rule was established for two reasons. First, NCARB is developing a large library of test questions and vignettes, but the library is not of sufficient size to offer each division of the exam more than once every six months. Second, the exams are not a test of luck. It is important to spend the time between test administrations gaining additional knowledge and experience in the particular areas being tested.

Frequently Asked Questions about the ARE Seminar Series

Can I register and pay as I take the classes?

As long as your register and pay for the classes in advance as you go a long, that's fine. If you plan on taking all of the classes you will save money by registering for the Full Series in advance.

If you are registering by mail, please send in a separate registration form with each payment that you make. Do not circle all the classes you plan to take without sending payment for all classes circled (ie., don't send partial payments).

I don't want to use my credit card online.

While Acteva does offer secure online-credit card transactions, we realize some people prefer to mail in a check. Therefore, feel free to mail or walk-in your registration and check. Also, you can walk-in to the office and pay by credit card.

Can I pick up course material early?

Yes! The course material will be available one week prior to class start date. Please contact the chapter office at 510/464-3600. Please note you will be charged for duplicate materials.

How can I become a member of AIA East Bay?

If you live and/or work in Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Solano County or Napa County you can join AIA East Bay. If you're currently a member in another AIA chapter but qualify for membership in the AIA East Bay you can download a transfer form here.

I'm a member of another AIA chapter. Why don't I get the full AIA discount?

Members of AIA East Bay receive full discounts for the ARE series; Members of any other AIA chapter receive a member-discount off the registration price.

I'm not a member of AIA East Bay, but my firm is. Do I get the chapter member rate?

Yes! If your firm is an AIA East Bay Member Firm (call 510/464-3600 x.11 to confirm), simply enter the firm's name in the "Member Number" position of the registration form.

I registered but now I can't make it. Can I get a refund?

Since AIA East Bay has to make a commitment to compensate the instructors, we regret cannot give full refunds. However, you can transfer your registration to someone else. Refunds are as follows:

40% refund given if cancelled more than seven days prior to class.

No.

Are there hotels nearby? Where should I stay?

There are many hotels and motels in downtown Oakland and Jack London Square. You can look at them at www.expedia.com .

Where can I park? What's the nearest BART Station?

We strongly recommend you take advantage of the BART. We are one block from the 12th Street City Center BART station. If you decide to drive, there are numerous parking garages within a block of the chapter office. The Clay Street Garage, between 14th & 15th Streets, is free on Saturdays and Sundays, and opens at 9:30am on the weekend.

Are review books included in the cost of the session?

Course materials are included in the cost of the session. However, we encourage you to supplement your preparations with the Kaplan A/E/C materials as well. They are available for 48-hour loan to all chapter members on a first-come basis. Non-members are free to use them as reference materials in the chapter office (Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm). You can purchase them online--and save 20%--here: Save 20% on Kaplan A/E/C study materials here.
